Parental Consultation

In the academic year 2020/21, Relationships Education and Health Education will become statutory in all primary schools in England.  This new subject will build on the non-statutory lessons we have previously taught in RSE. One of the most distinctive features of a Catholic Relationships and Health Education programme should be emphasising the vital role that parents have in nurturing their children on these matters. Moreover, as part of the new statutory RSHE curriculum, schools are required by law to consult with parents about programme content and choice of resources.

As a Catholic school, our mission is to support the spiritual, moral, social and cultural development of all of our pupils, rooted in the wisdom and teaching of the Church. The education of children in human sexuality is an important, precious and privileged responsibility.  The Church teaches us that this is very much a partnership with parents, in which parents are the ‘first educators’ of their children on these matters; ultimately, you confer on us the right to co-educate your children with you.

We have been researching various programmes that are available and have decided to adopt Life to the Full by Ten Ten Resources. Ten Ten is an award-winning Catholic educational organisation that is well-respected and very experienced in this field of work.

Life to the Full has been approved by our diocese.  Furthermore, Ten Ten have entered into a partnership with the Catholic Education Service and the Department for Education to provide training for teachers in Catholic schools on the subject of the new statutory curriculum. Therefore, we are confident that this programme is a very good fit for our school.

Through their programme, Ten Ten understand the foundational role that parents have in educating and nurturing their children on these matters. Within the programme, they have built in resources which will not only keep you informed about what is being taught in school, but will also give you the opportunity to engage your children in discussion, activity and prayer.

We would like to have your feedback on our approach, and particularly on the key decisions that we need to take regarding the teaching of certain topics.  To this end, we have opened a consultation period during which we welcome your feedback.

Ten Ten have provided an online Parent Consultation Tool. This is a simple-to-follow, short online course which:

  • Outlines the statutory changes that will take place.
  • Articulates a vision for Catholic Relationships and Health Education.
  • Explains how Life to the Full aims to help us fulfil the statutory curriculum with a Catholic ethos.
  • Provides some information about key decisions we need to make, in consultation with parents.
  • Answers some Frequently Asked Questions.

Ten Ten have also provided an Online Parent Portal which will be a tool we can use throughout the year to keep you informed and updated about the work we are doing in school.

To take part in the consultation, please do the following:

  • Access the Parent Consultation Tool here:

www.tentenresources.co.uk/parent-consultation-primary

You have been issued with a private user name and password in order to access the parent portal .

Once you have completed all of the above, please complete the following survey so that you are feeding back to school your views and opinions of the new RSE curriculum.

stages of the consultation process

RSE Programme of Study

As  a Catholic school, we have a specific responsibility to ensure that our Relationship Education scheme of work is fit-for-purpose in terms of the DfE statutory guidance and the expectations of your diocese, which is why we have chosen Life to the Full as our curriculum.

Ten Ten’s new programme for Catholic primary schools, Life to the Full, will teach Relationships Education and Health Education within the context of a Christian understanding of human sexuality rooted in the wisdom and teaching of the Catholic Church.

Given that RHE (Relationships and Health Education) will become a statutory subject for all schools from September 2020, we are embracing “the challenges of creating a happy and successful adult life” by giving pupils knowledge “that will enable them to make informed decisions about their wellbeing, health and relationships” (DFE Statutory Guidance).

We will deliver this teaching through the prism of Catholic RSHE.  The framework of our programme is taken from the Model Catholic RSE Programme by the Catholic Education Service, which has been highlighted by the Department of Education as a work of good practice.

Life to the Full is a fully resourced Scheme of Work in Relationships and Health Education (RHE) for Catholic primary schools which embraces and fulfils the new statutory curriculum. Taught with a spiral approach to learning, in which pupils will revisit the same topics at an age-appropriate stage through their school life, the programme includes teaching about personal health, physical and emotional wellbeing, strong emotions, private parts of the body, personal relationships, family structures, trusted adults, growing bodies, puberty, periods, life cycles, the dangers of social media, where babies come from, an understanding of the Common Good and living in the wider world. The entire teaching is underpinned with a religious understanding that our deepest identity is as a child of God – created chosen and loved by God. The programme is fully inclusive of all pupils and their families.

The programme includes:

  • Approx. 60 lesson plans for Years 1 to 6 (EYFS to follow in 2020/21);
  • High-quality videos created by Ten Ten specifically for UK-based Catholic primary schools;
  • Programme of prayer and worship music to accompany the scheme of work;
  • Assessment Activities;
  • Guidance for Programme Coordinators;
  • Teaching training sessions;
  • Programme Pathways for a variety of school timetables;
  • Online Parent Portal for links to home.
