Mastery English

Saint Patrick's is proud to have a teaching partnership with St Thomas of Canterbury Sheffield as we are part of the LUTSA and SSIF partnership group. As part of these we have become a mastery school particularly with regard to English and Maths. Our subject leads have development visits from LUTSA and our staff have access to high quality CPD opportunities as well.  As we are a half form entry, we have a two year programme of books that our children share over the course of the term. This length of time spent on a book enables our children to really fully understand all aspects of the book. Mastery English is currently in our Year Two through to Year Six. The toolkit as supplied by Mastery English gives our staff and pupils a consistent approach to their English lessons. The structure is the same in all of the year groups which will enable our students to access consistent teaching as they progress through our school.

Certainties:

  • Pupils believe they can achieve – they want to learn and enjoy learning English
  • Teacher conveys the message that progress is made through engagement and effort, expects every child to succeed, and is enthusiastic about the learning expected.
  • Every lesson has the whole class text on the tables and available to children.
  • Teacher models high quality writing and thinking as a writer in every lesson
  • Comprehension, SPAG and writing development are woven into the lesson

The core beliefs of Mastery English

Belief

An absolute belief that every child can and will achieve.

Focus

Focus on reasons why children can succeed, rather than excuses about why they will fail.

Preparedness

Be prepared to make a cultural shift from previous approaches.

Awareness

A strong awareness that the children’s life chances depend on achieving the expected standard as a minimum.

Ability

Removal of fixed ideas about innate ability: opportunities rather than genetics.

Potential

Learning potential is increased through effort.

Why Is Mastery English Needed?

Low achievement in reading, writing, grammar and punctuation is still a major issue, particularly for disadvantaged pupils. GDP in 2025 could be £32bn higher if action had been taken to ensure all children were reading well by the age of 11.  A wide "book gap" in Britain has emerged, with almost a quarter of 11-year-olds in the poorest families having fewer than 10 books in their home. While books remain popular, the most commonly read material by children is now text messages with websites and e-books also growing in popularity.

What is Mastery English?

An English curriculum rooted in the use of high quality texts which are used expertly by inspirational, passionate teachers to produce children who can write exciting, technically skilled extended pieces of writing at the end of each unit. Reading comprehension and grammatical knowledge are taught in context to facilitate deep and meaningful learning.

Reading

Children are not restricted to uninspiring, simple reading books but are encouraged to develop a love of reading through immersion in a high quality class text. Every child has their own copy of the book; reading comprehension skills are taught in context with class texts being chosen to match the attainment of the most competent readers in the class. Classic texts are used either in their entirety or in parts to supplement the whole class texts.

Grammar & Punctuation

As with reading, Grammar and punctuation is taught within the context of the class texts. Sentences from the text are explored and children are taught how to apply the skills they see the authors using in their own writing.

Writing Children are expected to write a technically-skilled, extended piece of writing at the end of each unit following lessons exploring and evaluating the genre of writing. Over each term, children become immersed in their class book and write a range of writing genres related to it including both fiction and non-fiction.

Each unit of work, which usually lasts 2 weeks (or 10 days), includes 4 main sections:

Explore Reading comprehension, feature hunts, genre exploration

Plan Sentence and word level work, vocabulary and punctuation

Write Extended writing at the end of every unit

Edit/Evaluate Reflect upon and improve what has already been written d! Each Mastery English lesson features 6 parts and is punctuated by regular assessment for learning in the form of checkpoints throughout the lesson.
